Do you look after someone who cannot manage without you? This could be a family member, friend or neighbour who, because of disability, illness or frailty, cannot manage on their own.
If so you are a CARER and you are entitled to support for yourself.
Carers MK can help carers by providing:
- up to date information and advice
- training to help with your caring role
- somebody to talk to in confidence
- opportunities to meet other carers
- access to events and relaxation therapies
Every year more than two million people in the UK become Carers. Becoming a Carer can be bewildering, confusing and frightening. No one is super human and all Carers need some support and back-up.
Recognising yourself as a Carer is the first step to getting the support you need. Many of us do not see ourselves as Carers: we are mums and dads, husbands, wives, partners, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbours. We are simply doing what anyone would, caring unpaid for a loved one or friend, helping them through when they are unable to do things for themselves. The fact is that you are also a Carer and there are things that you need to know. No one likes to be labelled, but recognising yourself as a Carer can be the gateway to getting a range of help and support.
Advantages of being registered as a carer
- We can see you are a carer and the information will help your GP when planning your medical care and support
- You will be invited for an annual flu vaccination
- We can provide contact details for carer groups and information
Redhouse Surgery works alongside Carers MK who specialise in supplying support and advice for carers of all ages. If you have any questions, please contact Christine at the practice.
Alternately, check Carers MK website www.carersmiltonkeynes.org or telephone them on 01908 231703.
Register as a carer
You can now register as a carer online using our online Carer’s Referral form. You will then be registered in our practice’s records as a carer. With your permission, we can also refer you to your local carer’s support organisation – Carers MK
You will also need to give a Carer’s Medical Record Access form to the person you care for. By completing this form, the patient gives consent for their carer to access their medical records and information relating to their care e.g. test results. Please ask the person you care for if they wish to complete this form and return the complete form to the practice’s receptionist.
